The newly cleared fields of Union General Fitz John Porter's charge on Jackson's lines on August 30, 1862.
With the clearing of trees and brush by the National Park Service, these fields now more accurately
represent the open visage presented to the men of both sides during the 1862 conflict.

The monument barely visible at the top of the hill is the Groveton Monument dedicated to the men in blue who sacrificed on this field.
