These faint country lanes are all that remain of the Old Mountain Road where General Jackson
was riding when, cloaked in darkness, his own men from the 18th North Carolina mistook
his party for Union soldiers and fired on him. The US National Park Service believes
that Stonewall Jackson received his wounds where these paths intersect.
