veterans of CSA Lt. General Richard S. Ewell's Corps. Grant had hoped to avoid fighting in the dense woods but
Lee knew the undergrowth would diminish Grant's numerical advantage. Here, the monument to the
140th New York marks the location of their valiant but ultimately failed assault against Ewell's lines.
