The Bloody Lane / Sunken Road and the west fields over which marched the Union soldiers towards
General Daniel Harvey Hill's awaiting Confederates. Note how the undulating terrain
offered some protection as the Federals advanced but also screened their vision
along with that of their Confederate counterparts. In part because of this,
neither knew exactly what awaited them as each came into view.
