Facing the top of Matthew's Hill from the point of the Confederate Line early during the Battle of 1st Manassas / Bull Run.
When the Union men appeared at the top of the hill, the Confederates opened fire. Colonel Nathan Evans threw his 900
Southerners against some 15,000 advancing Union troops. He and his men delayed the blue coats long enough to allow
for later Confederate counterattacks as the Federals threatened to sweep the Southerners from Henry Hill.
