To the left, under the darker line of green foliage running diagonally to
the tree line rest the remains of Lt. General Richard S. Ewell's earthworks
behind which his
men waited then repelled the expected Union onslaught. To the right, in the clearing along the tree line,
is the field
over which the 140th New York charged the left of Ewell's line.
