Edwin Forbes, present at the Battle of Gettysburg, sketched the above drawing of the fighting on the morning of July 3, 1863 on Culp's Hill.
The notes on the drawing read:
Thick woods on the hill behind the works. Twigs and limbs hanging down cut by bullets.
Ewell's Corps attacking the 12th Army Corps in the breastwork
on Friday morning, July 3rd, the Rebels made a most desperate attack on this position
for six hours and a half they hurled the veterans of Jackson's old Corps against the breastworks
they were defeated in every attempt with terrible slaughter. 10am
